今日は日本の教育制度についてお話ししたいと思います。

Today I'd like to talk about the educational system of Japan.

図３を見てください。

Please take a look at figure three.

この図は日本の小学校から高校までの学校数を表しています。

This shows the number of schools from grade school through high school in Japan.

日本には約40000校の学校があります。

There are about 40 thousand schools in total in Japan.

小学校は郵便局の数だけあるといわれています。

They say the number of grade schools is about the same as post offices.

小学校の就学期間は6年間です。

The period of school attendance for grade school is six years.

中学校までが義務教育です。

Compulsory education continues to the end of junior high school.

高校への進学率は2007年度で98％です。

98% of graduates went on to senior high school in fiscal 2007.

大学への進学率は約50パーセントです。

About 50% of graduates go on to college.

日本の大学進学率は高いと思いますか？

Do you think the percentage of students enrolling in universities in Japan is high?

韓国では学生の89％、アメリカでは82％が大学に進んでおり、日本の進学率は33位となっています。

89% of students went on to universities in Korea, 82% in the United States, and Japan took 33rd place.

私はまだまだ日本の大学進学率は上がっていくと思います。

I think the university advancement rate in Japan will rise more and more.
