初めての台湾
この冬休み、私はいつもとは一味違った冬休みを過ごしました。２４日の朝、家でクリスマスケーキを食べるのではなくて、私は中部国際空港で西先生と学校の友達の萌、由佳、由貴子、真由と合流して台湾へ行く飛行機に乗りました。台湾の首都台北についてまず漢字の看板に驚かされました。ここって本当に外国なの？国内のどこかではないの？でもその考えは空港をでて、ASEPの他のメンバーとともに観光バスに乗るときすぐ消えました。まず観光バスのサイドが鏡張りなのに驚きました。そしてバスガイドさんが台湾の歴史を説明してくれている間見えた外の景色が、今私たちがいるのは異国の地なのだと実感させました。１日目は台北観光で終わり、２日目には台湾を縦断する新幹線に乗って高雄へ向かいました。駅に降りて改札口を出るとすぐに樹徳高校の歓迎を迎えました。写真を撮ったりいろいろしたりしているうちにみんな解散になって、私は自分のホストファミリーの車に乗っていました。
エルイーズ
私のホストスチューデントはエルイーズという子でした。台湾へ来る前何通かメールをおくりあいましたが、実際会ってみたらかなり印象がちがいました。エルイーズのお父さんは少し日本語がしゃべれると聞いていましたが、思っていたよりうまくてエルイーズの家に帰る途中も昔日本へ旅行したことなどを話してくれました。家に帰ったらエルイーズはお母さんと、兄、弟を紹介してくれました。その後夕食を食べに行きました。なぜか選んだのは日本食レストランで、２日前日本から来たのに…と思いながら食べてみると味がすごく似ていて、イギリスの日本食と比較してやっぱり近場はちがうなと思うのでした。その後私がメガネなくしたことに気づいて、新幹線の中だと伝えたらすぐ駅へ伝えてくれました。その後私がメールで行きたいと言っていたカラオケに連れて行ってくれて、１２時半ぐらいまで歌い通しました。カラオケにはなんと日本の歌があり、エルイーズのお父さんが演歌を歌えることに驚かされました。しかも上手でした。この１週間を通して思ったのですが台湾は日本の番組を放送していたり、店員さんが日本語を話せたりして日本のことをみんなよく知っていることです。やっぱり日本が占領していたからなのでしょうか？そう思うと悲しくなります。
冷水シャワー
ホームステイ２日目は近くの海辺まで電車で行ってイギリス領事官へ行き、その後船に乗り港町を散策しました。夕飯は大きなホテルで豪華なバイキングでした。家に戻ってシャワーを浴びたとき水がずっと冷水なのに驚いて、聞いてみたところなんとガスで沸かす代わりに日光で温めていて今日は曇っていたから水が冷たいらしい。そういえば昨日もお湯がぬるかったと思いだして、エルイーズが平気なのに驚きました。
プレゼン準備その１
次の日初めてエルイーズと一緒に彼女の学校、樹徳高校へ行きました。その日は日曜日で、２日後に控えたプレゼンの準備のためだけにASEPメンバーが集まりました。そこで初めて一緒にプレゼンをするヘレン以外の樹徳側のメンバー：サンディ、ミニー、ケンと顔を合せました。私たち南国側はまだ結論さえ考えてないのに対して樹徳側は前置きから途中までスライドを完成させてくれていました。午前中はプレゼンの方向性を考えることだけに費やし、午後は台本を考えて完成に近いところまで行きました。でもせっかく樹徳のみんなが英語で話してくれているところに私たちがつい日本語で話しあってしまって、台本も南国側でほとんど勝手に作成した形になってしまいました。一日の終わりに樹徳のサンディとミニーが、私たちが日本語ばかり話してプレゼンをどんどん作ってしまうから私たちは何もすることがなくて暇になってしまう。あと私たちのつくったスライドは使わないの？と聞いてきて、私たちはみな黙ってしまいました。そしてすごくこの一日を反省して、これからは全員ずっと英語！と硬く誓いました。その晩南国メンバーとそのホストスチューデントたち全員で集まって高雄の繁華街でプリを撮ったり、ショッピングをしたりしました。私たちと違ってASEPまで付き合うことのなかったホストスチューデント同士が仲良くなってきたのを感じて、それが個人的にうれしかったです。
プレゼン準備その２
次の日、エルイーズとスクールバスに乗って樹徳へ行きました。今日こそエルイーズと授業が受けられると思っていた私は、テーブルに置いてあったスケジュール表をみてがっかりしました。校長先生からの歓迎のあいさつ、学校のオリエンテーションの後、またもやプレゼン準備づけの一日が待っていました。でもオリエンテーションの初めにみんなでいくつかのクラスで自己紹介をすることができて、クラスの盛り上がりが楽しかったです。ただ、みんなの注目が私たちの制服の短さに注目したことに少し困りました。学校紹介でびっくりしたのは、樹徳が日本でいう専門学校にすごく近いということです。そのための設備がすごく整っていて、南国との違いが新鮮でした。この日は前日こなかったヘレンも来て、ちゃんとみんな英語で話しあうことができて、いろんな意味ですっきりした日でした。プレゼンもみんな役割分担して、ある人はスライド、ある人は台本、またある人はスライドに使う写真を撮りました。なんとか完成して、読む場所を決めて解散になりました。
プレゼン当日！！
プレゼン当日、学校に着いたら樹徳・南国ASEPメンバー全体の空気がピリピリしていて会場に着いてからもずっとセリフを練習し続けていました。午前中は影戸先生の台湾語スピーチに圧倒された後、ずっといろんなグループのプレゼンを聞きました。どこも同じ条件でやっているのになんでこんなに洗練されているのだろうと驚かされるところもあれば、その逆もありました。お昼は、食べたらすぐに練習を始めました。前日先に帰ってしまった西先生とジェニー先生に初めて演技を見せたら、ふたりともすごく励ましてくれて自信がつきました。午後控え場所で練習していたら知らぬ間に順番が来てしまいました。すこし戸惑ったのと、みんなセリフが覚え切れていないのもあって、結果少し不完全な感じになってしまいました。でも途中にいれた劇で観客が笑ってくれたのがとてもうれしかったです。
送別会
プレゼンの後、パーティでは樹徳・南国ASEPメンバーの距離がすごく近くなっているのを感じました。舞台でのパフォーマンスはどれもいいものばかりで、とくにインドネシアの人がAvril LavigneのWhen you’re goneをアカペラで歌いながら泣きだしてしまったときはもう明日台湾を離れちゃうのだなあ、と自分まで悲しい気持ちになってしまいました。そんな時席にもどったらエルイーズが来てくれていて、しかも号泣していました。私はもう会えない樹徳ASEPメンバーにまたいつか会おうといって告げました。その時、クリッカーとしてプレゼン準備初日に突如メンバーになったデニーが（女子）メンバー全員分リボンのヘアゴムをプレゼントしてくれて、感動しました。
その晩エルイーズ、由佳と由貴子と、二人のホストスチューデントと最後の町散策に出かけました。
台湾との別れ
最後の日、荷物を詰めていると、エルイーズのお母さんがこの１週間知らぬ間にお土産を買ってきてくれていたのを渡してくれました。こんなにもらっていいのかと思っているとさらに家にあったアクセサリーや服を兄弟へのお土産にと渡してくれました。すごくうれしかったのですが、当然トランクは２０kgオーバー。４つ手持ちになりました。空港について、とうとう別れの時間が来てしまいました。エルイーズは夏に日本に来ると約束してくれました。他のホストスチューデントたちとも知らぬ間に仲良くなっていて、別れがつらかったです。
こうして私の一味違った冬休みは終わりました。でも台湾での体験はいつまでも私たちの心に残ると思います。
Special Christmas

Visiting Taiwan for the
first time
I spent a different kind of Christmas this year. On
the morning of Christmas Eve, I went to join Mr. Nishi, my friends at school:
Moe, Yuka, Yukiko and Mayu at Centrair and went on the plane destined to
Taiwan, instead of eating Christmas cake like any other year. When we arrived
at Taipei, I was first surprised at the amount of Kanji writing on the sign
boards, here and there at the airport. Is this really a foreign country? Isn’t
it not somewhere in Japan that we are in? These thoughts disappeared when I
went on the bus, out of the airport with all the other Japanese members of
ASEP. I was firstly surprised at the glass sides of the bus, then the scenery
we saw outside the bus while the tour guide explained us about the history of
Taiwan made us realise that we are actually in a foreign land. The first day
ended by site seeing around Taipei and we went on a rapid train that goes
vertically cross the isle of Taiwan to Kaohsiung. The first moment we went out
of the ticket gate, we were welcomed by the people from Shu-te high school.
After doing things like taking photos and stuff, we all separated and I was in
my host family’s car.
Eloise
My host student was called Eloise. We exchanged e-mails before I come to
Taiwan, but her impression was quite different from what I thought by reading
her e-mail. Eloise‘s father spoke Japanese very well and he told me about his
trip to Japan. I was surprised because I didn’t expect him to speak so well.
When we arrived home, Eloise showed me her mother and the two brothers. After
that we went to a Japanese restaurant to have dinner there. I ate as I thought
why are we eating here when I just came from Japan two days ago, but tasting
the food and comparing it with Japanese food in U.K.; I thought Japanese food
in Taiwan is much similar to the real one. After dinner I realised I lost my glasses.
When I told Eloise my glasses must be in the rapid train, she called the
station right away for me. Then we went to Karaoke that I wrote on e-mail that
I wanted to go. We sang on and on up to 12:30. To my surprise, there were
Japanese songs and Eloise’s father sang Enka. He was good too. Through my stay
in Taiwan, I noticed that people in Taiwan know a lot about Japan. There are TV
programs from Japan on the TV and many vendors can speak Japanese. Is this may
be because Japan had colonised Taiwan before? It made me depressed to think
like that.
Cold shower
On the second day of home staying, we went on a train to the nearby seaside. We
went to the old British colonial office then went on a ship and walk around the
port. We had buffet dinner at some big hotel. After we arrived home, I took a
shower and noticed that the water was freezing cold. When I asked why, Eloise
told me that instead of using gas, they use the sunlight to heat the water up
and because it was cloudy that day that the water didn’t warm up. I remembered
it was lukewarm the day before too. I was surprised how Eloise can cope with
this.
Preparing presentation no.1
On the next day, I went with Eloise to her school
Shu-te for the first time. It was Sunday and ASEP member gathered there just to
work on the presentation. I met Sandy, Miny, Ken, the members of ASEP from the
Shu-te for the first time except Helen. We Nanzan students hadn’t even thought
up of the conclusion where Shu-te students had already completed the slides
from the introduction to some part in the middle. We spent the morning to think
up how we should lead this presentation and by the end on this day we got up to
the point that the script was nearly complete. When Shu-te students tried to
communicate with us using English, us Nanzan students couldn’t help talking in
Japanese. So the script was practically made just by Nanzan students. At the
end of this day, Sandy and Miny from Shu-te told us that because we keep on
making the presentation speaking Japanese, they didn’t have anything to do.
Also asked us whether we are actually using the slides that they already made
for us, because it doesn’t seem like so. We Nanzan students couldn’t say
anything to those words. We regret what we did and swore to ourselves that we
would only speak English from now on. That night, all Nanzan students and their
host students gathered to go to the city centre of Kaohsiung to go shopping and
take Puri. Unlike the Nanzan members, who were friends before ASEP, not all
host students we’re not friends before ASEP. I felt glad that they are becoming
closer to each other too.
Preparing presentation no.2
On the next day, I went on a school bus to Shu-te with Eloise. I was depressed,
seeing the schedule of today because I was looking forward to take a class with
Eloise. We were to have a greeting and welcome from the principle of Shu-te,
take an orientation tour around Shu-te, then to work on our presentation again.
But it was fun going around some classes to greet at the beginning of the
orientation. We just didn’t know what to do when everyone asked us about the
length of our uniform skirts. What surprised me at the school presentation was
that Shu-te high school was similar to what we call a professional school in
Japan. There were many facilities for the classes taken at Shu-te and the
difference between Shu-te and Nanzan was interesting thing to see. On this day,
Helen who didn’t come the day before came and we all spoke in English from
beginning to the end. It was great we made use of the regret we had the day
before to make this day a good one. We divided the work so that everyone can do
something. Some can work on the slide, the others on the script and other can
take photos for the slide. We somehow got the presentation finished and went
home after we decided who is reading where.
The day of the presentation!!
On the day of the presentation the Shu-te/Nanzan ASEP member were all very nervous.
We all kept on practicing our words even after we arrived at the hall. After
being impressed by Mr. Kageto’s speech in Taiwanese, we listened to many
presentations given on the stage. Some presentation made me think how they
could prepare this when they had same number of days to do it. Some made me
think in the contrary. At the lunch break, we started to practice right after
we all finished eating lunch. When we showed our presentation to the two
teachers; Mr. Nishi and Miss. Jenny, they both cheered us so much that I felt
confident. In the afternoon, we were practising when our turn came so quickly
that I didn’t notice. The presentation ended a little imperfectly because we
were in a small panic and hadn’t remembered our lines perfectly. But I was glad
that the audience laughed when we did the little plays inside the presentation.
The leaving party
At the leaving party after the presentations, I felt that the Shu-te/Nanzan members
are very close to each other now. The performances on stage were all wonderful,
especially when Indonesian lady sang “When you’re gone” by Avril Lavigne
without music and busted into tears, it made me realise that I’m leaving Taiwan
the next day and made me feel sad too. When I went back to my seat, I found
Eloise crying. I said my final goodbye to the Shu-te/Nanzan members telling
them to meet again sometime. Right then, Denny who became member as a clicker
just two days ago gave us a ribbon each for all the (girl) member of the
Shu-te/Nanzan. This night, Eloise and I went to the final city walking with
Yuka, Yukiko and their host students.
Leaving Taiwan
On the final day, Eloise’s mother gave me the souvenirs she bought for me when
I was packing my luggage. While I wondered if it was okay to receive so many
gifts, she gave me some more things from the house, like an accessory or a
T-shirt for my brother and my sister. I was very happy to receive so much but
of course, the weight exceeds 20kg.I ended up with taking 4 bags on the plane.
The time to leave came so soon after arriving at the airport. Eloise promised
to come to Japan next summer. It was hard to say goodbye to the other host
students too, because I was already friends with them.
This was how my special Christmas ended. Our trip
ended, but I’m sure our memories in Taiwan would last in our hearts forever.
