「初めての台湾、そして人々」

僕はこの台湾研修に参加するのは今回が初めてでした。研修を終えた今は心の底から参加してよかった、欲を言えばもう少し長い期間滞在したかったと思っています。

　台湾に行く前から、現地はとても暖かいと聞いていました。実際、半袖でも大丈夫なくらいとても過ごしやすい環境でした。しかし、高雄市の空気はお世辞にもきれいとは言えず、二輪に乗っている人々のほとんどがマスクをしていたことは印象的でした。

　空港に着いたときには、義守大学の生徒が迎えに来てくれて、初日の夜には観光案内をしてくれました。その日の夜に行ったナイトマーケットという市場では、商売用ではあると思いますが、こちらが日本人と分かると、英語よりも日本語をペラペラと話し、親切に対応してくれたことにはとても驚きました。日本も過去に台湾を支配していた時代があるというのに、そんな日本人に対してここまで心を開いてくれるのに感銘を受けました。

　また、今回僕は今までの人生の中で初めてホームステイをしました。また、１人でホームステイをすると言われていたので、とても不安でした。しかし、実際はそんな不安も吹き飛ばすかのように、明るく元気な家族に巡り合うことができました。また、よそから来た僕を家族の一員のように温かく迎えてくれたので感動しました。

　去年日本福祉大学で開催したWorld Youth Meetingでは主催者側として国際交流イベントを体験しましたが、今回のASEPというイベントには参加者として台湾の学生とのコラボレーションのプレゼンテーションをしました。

　今年のプレゼンテーションのテーマが「our new lives」ということで、台湾に行く前にお互いに自分たちの考えをまとめたのですが、時間が十分になく、台湾についてから２日間まるまるどう繋げていくかについて議論しました。普段の会話もそうでしたが、英語が唯一のコミュニケーション手段だったのですが、台湾の学生の英語スキルはかなり高く、分からない単語や難しい文法を使っていたので、とてもすごいと思うと同時に自分のスキルの低さにとても悔しい思いをしました。

　他にもいろいろと苦労をしましたが、本番のプレゼンは緊張しながらも何とか乗り切ることができました。さらにメンバーが一番驚いたことは、金賞をいただいたということです。正直いただけるなんて思ってもいなかったので、あまり実感がありませんでした。しかし、苦労は必ず報われるというのは本当なのだなと感じました。

　ホームステイやコラボレーションを通じて、たくさんの友達ができました。このつながりを決して絶やさないように保っていきたいと思います。

My first visit to Taiwan and Their Open Minded People

This was the first time that I participated in this program. When my teacher said “Why don’t you attend this program?”, I didn’t have enough interest in it. However, now I have come to think that I want to stay longer in Taiwan. Indeed, I did have a wonderful time.

The temperature in Kaohsiung was warmer than we expected. Actually, the environment was very comfortable for us. However, the air was not so clear and most of the people riding on motorcycles wore a masks. The air of Kaohsiung was not clean by any standard.

　When I arrived at the airport, a student of I-SHO University kindly came to pick us up and guided us to the night market. While we were in Night Market, I was surprised that the people working there were accustomed to Japanese people. They used Japanese words for better communication with us showing their warmhearted hospitality. They spoke more Japanese than English when they knew that we are Japanese. I was impressed that they opened a heart to us regardless of the fact that the Japanese military occupied this area in the past.

　This was also the first time for me to stay with a host family. I was so nervous to try a home stay program because I had to stay alone. However, I was so lucky to meet a cheerful, bright family. I was impressed because they welcomed me like a member of the family.

　I have played the role of an organizer in the World Youth Meeting, an international exchange event, which we held last year at Nihon Fukushi University. From our experiences there, we have been trying to do a collaborative presentation with the Taiwanese students at ASEP.

The theme of the presentation this year was “Our New Lives”. We had discussed the main points, but we didn’t have enough time to prepare. English was the only way to communicate with Taiwanese students and their skills of English were higher than ours. They used words that were not familiar to us. This made me want to improve my English more.

　Although we had difficulties in making the presentation, we were able to get the gold medal award in the end. None of our members expected that. However, we felt that our efforts paid off.

　Through home-stay and the collaboration work, I made a lot of friends. I want to keep in touch with them. I believe these friendships will surely deepen, and I will improve my English.
