My Host family

One thing that I looked forward to in ASEP was spending time with my host family. I was the only one who had not had any e-mail exchange with my host family so I was worried. However, my host student, Together was very kind and funny so my worries went away at once when I met her.. When we were getting out of the parking lot, host father had a quarrel with a guard man so I was little bit scared at first. I thought he gets angry easily but later I found out that he is actually a nice person who always smile and laugh out loud. At their house, I met Together’s mother and grandmother. Mother was tall and grandmother was short. They both asked many questions to me in Chinese. Together’s house sold lunch boxes so we ate meal from the lunch boxes that night. Together explained everything in English so I did not have any difficulties understanding my host family. They said I looked like a Taiwanese. They think many Japanese girls have light skin, are short and wear a dress. I told them that my ancestor could have been a Taiwanese because host father looked like my uncle. That night, my host family took me to a grocery store. I was full but host father bought me an ice cream.

Taiwanese friends

Next morning when I woke up, family was already working in the shop. This day Together and her friends, Meng and TsaiTsai took me to Kaohsiung city tour. We went to the biggest shopping mall in Kaohsiung. In the afternoon, two other friends Aster and Monster joined and we all went to Shinzetukou. They were all so much fun. We later went to the biggest night market in Kaohsiung. I was very surprised to see how crowed the place was. I ate smelly tofu, chicken’s legs, and pig’s blood soup. I did not really like those food, however it was fun because the place was like a festival. I told the girls that they were lucky to have big size shoes in Taiwan, then they asked me to choose a shoes for their friend’s birthday. I chose one and it turned out on the last day that the friend was me! I was so touched and surprised.

Farewell

By participating in ASEP, I learned that Taiwanese people are kind, warm and friendly. I think that is why I cried at the airport when I said goodbye to them.

Preparation of presentation

Preparation of presentation was difficult, however, there were many things that I learned. Especially the first day did not work out very well. We decided the topic would be internet, but we had no idea what we wanted to tell to the audience. I felt sorry for Taiwanese students because we had no suggestions even though we decided on internet. We started making PowerPoint and the script, but in a slow process. I think I was being hasty because there was no time and people did not seem in hurry. When I look back, my behavior was rather bad. There were sarcasm in my words. I took everything in a bad way and thought things such as “I could have done it faster.” In my previous school, we often did group presentation. There were only four people in the class so after some months, my classmates knew what to do and moved spontaneously if someone said an idea. However, this presentation was with different member. I had to tell them what should be done. I had to tell them, but I somehow could not say as I used to in my old school so I felt frustrated.

Reflection

At the end of that day, Ms. Jenny told us to explain why we were making a new Powerpoint when there was one made by the Taiwanese students. We had been making a new one without any explanation to the Taiwanese students. We had been using Japanese most of the time that day so the Taiwanese students did not understand what we were doing. I had thought that they understood everything and their unwilling behavior just came from their nature. I was frustrated at myself for misunderstanding them and being so hasty.

Conflict solved

The second day of preparation went very well. When I look back, I do not know why we did not use English on the first day. I think it went well because we did not speak English and everyone worked together. I was happy because everyone worked more than the first day. Finally, the Powerpoint and the script finished and we were ready for the presentation.

The actual presentation did not go as we practiced. We made some mistakes in our speech. However, I was happy that the preparation of the presentation finished in a way I could be satisfied. The actual presentation was not perfect, but what I leaned in the process will not be forgotten. And I hope to make use of what I learned in ASEP in school and work.
